Mariss Jansons

“Yu Lu is a talented conductor who prepares his scores thoroughly, has a clear technique, and knows how to communicate non-verbally with an orchestra.”

Two great marking points in Yu Lu’s career were fortunately captured on video: the performance of Shostakovich Symphony no. 5 with the Concertgebouw Orchestra recorded during the masterclass with Mariss Jansons in 2012, and the prize winners’ concert with the Seiji Ozawa Music Academy Orchestra in the Kyoto Concert Hall.

More recent are the videos where Yu Lu performs Beethoven’s 3rd Symphony and The Rite of Spring.

“A wonderful serenade by Brahms, lyrical drama by Berlioz and hidden ballet music by Poulenc - on their latest CD, ensemble Camerata RCO, consisting of members of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, plays a programme of unusual and surprising works. The three works are conducted by 29-year-old Chinese conductor Yu Lu.”

“Anyone committed to the longest work on this CD - Brahms' somewhat eccentric, lyrical and capricious five-movement Serenade No. 2 - deserves attention. In this case, it is Yu Lu who keeps the work's texture nicely breezy and doesn't let the tempi drag for a moment to keep the music lively and alert, revealing its special charm.”

I have recently met the young Chinese conductor, Yu Lu, and was very impressed by his his devotion to music. Having watched a DVD of him conducting various works, it was apparent that this is a genuinely talented musician, with an excellent control of an orchestra and clear interpretative ideas.

I believe it would be wise to allow him participate in various conducting competitions as well as facilitate his access to both educational and performing opportunities.
